A rare original example of Alfred Cheney Johnston's multi-figure work, this Mardi Gras themed follies scene was part of Florence Ziegfeld's endless campaign to promote his "Glorified American Girls." The models being serenaded by the pierrot include both Agnes Ayres and Naomi Johnson, which dates this wildly jazz age composition to approximately 1927, when Ayres was working on Whoopee, and Johnson appearing in Rio Rita. Both productions were part of the Flo Ziegfeld empire, and as such, Johnston worked as photographer for both. As the Glorified American Girls were the main attraction in each of Ziegfeld's productions, it is unsurprising that the most beautiful players from a number of different musicals were brought together for this cross-promotional fine art photograph.

This is one of very few round images created by Johnston, who experimented with the format in the late 1920s. It is inkstamped on the verso, and signed with his script signature. The piece is professionally framed and matted, with archivally correct materials.
