This sophisticated and detailed stamped Platinum print landscape miniature by William J Mullins features a quietly settling evening sky as seen through a landscape of trees. An early photo-secessionist image by William J Mullins, associate of Alfred Stieglitz, whose work was first exhibited at Steiglet's famous New York City Gallery 291. Examples by Mullins can be found in the Smithsonian collections, and at galleries nationwide.
Mullins (1860-1917) lived in Franklin Pennsylvania, and worked as a chemist for Standard Oil before turning to photography in the 1890s. He is best known for his studies of nature and his small-scale format photographs, which reveal his strong sense of form and design.
